Since December 2000, the National Foundation for Youth Music has set up 24 'action zones' across the UK, with the aim of providing music-making activities for 0-18 year olds who might otherwise lack the opportunity.
sound futures is Birmingham's Youth Music Action Zone, and exists to support music-making for young people across the city. Working with a range of partner organisations and musicians, we aim to establish and develop a broad and dynamic youth music scene.
We believe that music has the ability to transform the lives, careers and attitudes of young people, and our work is built around this vision.
Whilst we work to develop youth music across the whole of Birmingham, we also feel that it is important to prioritise our activity in those areas which have had little or no previous access to professional music-making. We have therefore worked in some of the least well-served areas of the city: Hodge Hill, Bordesley Green, Washwood Heath, Shard End, Northfield, Weoley Castle, Longbridge, Perry Barr, Oscott, Kingstanding, Stockland Green, Kings Norton and associated wards, South Yardley, Nechells, Quinton and Ladywood.
